In his role as director of the Bates College Museum of Art, Mark Bessire was an integral partner in collecting and granting permission to 217 Films for important source material used in the documentary Visible Silence: Marsden Hartley, Painter and Poet. The 217 Films crew offers Mark our hearty congratulations as he assumes his new role as director of the Portland Museum of Art. Visible Silence contains images of many drawings, photos, and artifacts from the extensive Bates collection. The magnificent toy soldier used in this film clip below was owned by Hartley and is part of the Bates collection.

~ Donald Miller, Naples Daily News
Don't miss Marsden Hartley: American Modern at the Naples Museum of Art in Naples, Florida. This show ends January 11, 2008. 217 Films documentary Visible Silence: Marsden Hartley, Painter and Poet has been included as part of the exhibit to give patrons a multi-media experience of Hartley's life and work.
Donald Miller of the Naples Daily News writes (read full article HERE):
Because painter and poet Marsden Hartley was so varied in content, he has been difficult to place in American art. But Naples has a chance to view many of his excellent post-impressionist and abstract works in the exhibition, “Marsden Hartley: American Modern,” at the Jay and Patty Baker Naples Museum of Art through Jan. 11....this exhibition is enriched by “Visible Silence: Marsden Hartley, Painter and Poet,” a DVD movie that Hartley enthusiast Michael Maglaras directed and narrated on-camera.
